Oscar 2015 Ratings: TV viewership down while digital traffic up

The rating are almost out for the Oscars and preliminary ratings indicate the 87th Annual Academy Awards fell 14% in total viewers, drawing 36.6 million viewers in fast national ratings.

Last year when Ellen Degeneres hosted the show it garnered 40.2 million total viewers in fast national ratings and eventually rose to 43.7 million.

In the 18yrs to 49yrs demo this year’s ceremony saw a decrease, going from 12.1 rating in 2014 to a 10.8.

If these numbers hold in this ballpark, the 2015 Oscars will be the lowest rated since 2008, which saw final numbers of 32 million viewers.

If there is any good news about this year’s Oscars, which saw Birdman take home the top prize, it’s  that host NPH kept the runtime under control.

To say the least The Oscars are never a concise affair, but in the past few years the Academy has seemed to level out the once out-of-control runtimes.

Last year’s show clocked in at 3 hours and 38 minutes. Meanwhile, the official broadcaster ABC says year-over-year digital traffic was up, with visits to  Oscar.com up 14% on Sunday and video views up 46% from last year.
